Organizations like the Atkinson Kiwanis Club, the Atkinson Woman's Club, the local American Legion, Atkinson Boosters Club, the Atkinson Heritage Society and others not only joined that effort but also lend their hands and monetary donations to other community programs like an on going beautification program in the village and Scouting opportunities for both boys and girls. Church organizations also offer their services to the larger community. Through these community-service opportunities, residents both give and receive and, in so doing, make this Western Illinois town a great place to live, work and raise a family. While Veterans Park is home to many of the Annual Heritage Days festivities, it's also a popular place for family picnics and reunions in its shelter or under the shade of its many trees, and its playground equipment draws lots of children on warm, breezy days. Several smaller green spaces in the village promise other spots where one can" stop and smell the roses."
The village also maintains the Atkinson Community Center in what was once Atkinson High School before the local district merged with the adjoining Geneseo district. It has been reborn as the town's place to play with open gyms, men's basketball leagues, indoor baseball practice facilities, martial arts classes, to name just a few. The complex also includes outdoor baseball diamonds, a football/ soccer field, tennis courts and playground areas. Even a weight-lifting center is available for residents
